The Story of This Rug

The Shah Abbas pattern is named after Safavid Shah Abbas I, patron of the 17th-century Isfahan workshops; this composition of large palmettes, lotus, and arabesque entwined branches represents the pinnacle of palace carpet art. Afghan artisans combine this heritage with their own natural dye knowledge: wool is treated with alum and iron mordants, dyed repeatedly in plant extracts, then washed in sun and running water after weaving to achieve its characteristic patina.

Why a Single Piece Handwoven Afghan Rug

  1. Uniqueness: Only one of this rug exists; the same knot rhythm and dye batch can never be repeated.
  2. Natural dye durability: Unlike synthetic aniline, root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
  3. Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool from high-altitude sheep with high lanolin content; provides natural stain resistance and silky luster.
  4. Asymmetric Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges compared to Turkish (Gordes) knots.
  5. Investment value: Genuine naturally dyed Afghan rugs gain value through generations of use.

Color and Pattern

Large Shah Abbas palmettes and lotus rosettes symmetrically arranged on a root red background; clusters of leaves, entwined branches, and small cartouche motifs fill the spaces. The border frames the composition with a cream background featuring natural scanning and a miniature palmette row. Pale ivory, pomegranate green, and indigo blue accents contrast with the red ground.

Care Recommendations

  • Clean with a brushless vacuum head on low power.
  • Blot stains immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
  • Rotate 180° every 6 months to evenly distribute sun and traffic wear.
  • Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with natural dyes.

This rug is sold once; no identical piece exists in any other home.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of handwoven and natural fiber Carpetdocia pieces that add value to your living space for generations.

Immediate Action and Liquid Contact
Timing is the most critical factor in case of possible liquid spills. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth to gently blot the liquid from the surface without rubbing. Always perform this action in the direction of the carpet’s nap (the natural lay of the fibers). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers like TENCEL™ and viscose. Stop the intervention immediately if you have any doubts.

Routine Care and Light Balance
Always prefer vacuum cleaners with low suction power in your weekly cleaning routine. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural fibers to light and prevent regional tone differences (fading), we recommend rotating your carpet every 2 to 6 months.

Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the carpet’s silky shine and structural integrity. For deep cleansing, seek support only from professional carpet care centers specialized in natural fibers.

Washing Instructions
Delicate pieces in the Carpetdocia collections are not suitable for machine washing due to their structure. (Only specific models clearly labeled "Washable" in their name can be washed in household machines on a low heat and delicate cycle.)
